Hard Enduro Clutch Set Up for TM 250/300

Hard Enduro is an abusive sport especially when it comes to clutches. We have been involved in the sport for the last four years and have learned a lot about how to set up a TM Clutch to survive.

First and foremost is quality transmission oil, there isn't much in there only 700cc, so it needs to be quality, and you need to change it often. We use Motorex 10W/40 Racing Gear Oil.

Next is clutch plates, TM OEM clutch plates are good but super expensive. There are aftermarket plates available, but they vary in thickness and the total thickness of the clutch pack (total thickness of all the plates friction and steel is critical). If the clutch pack is too thick the clutch slave cylinder may over-extend and the O-ring on the slave piston will fail, if it is not thick enough the clutch may not engage fully and will slip.

Fortunately, we have worked this out and have clutch packs available in both Carbon and Cork clutch friction plates. These include fiber and steel plates with the correct combination of steel plates to achieve the correct thickness. (Steel plates are available in 1.8mm, 1.5mm, and 1.0mm). We use Carbon plates from EBC

Finally, when replacing the clutch plates be sure to inspect the clutch basket and clutch for excessive grooving. Deep grooves will keep the plates from moving freely and cause a number of issues including clutch chatter and clutch drag. The OEM clutch basket and the OEM clutch hub are reasonably priced and should be replaced if grooved. When replacing the clutch basket, it is also a good idea to replace the rubber dampeners. SAM Racing has a billet clutch basket available, and it includes the rubber dampeners.

As I finish this up, I am sure somebody is asking what about springs, honestly, they haven't been an issue. They are inexpensive so we change them but usually just before a new season. We have added these kits to our on-line store and the parts are available separately, have questions give us a call we're happy to help.
